I’ve been drawing type since 2008, and learned that you can draw type with almost anything that will make a mark. But, sometimes using a quality tool can give you work a more refined look. Sometimes it takes a special tool to make a special mark. Below you’ll find a list of my tools and resources I use on a regular basis.

The Canson Universal 9 x12 Sketchpad
After years of searching and testing for a good sketchbook, I’ve landed on the Canson Universal 9×12 Sketch Pad. It’s wire-bound so it lays flat, and it’s hefty enough to handle a good dose of ink. I’ve given these sketchbooks utter hell and they’ve always held up well. And the 9 x 12 is just the right size for a backpack. Buy it at Amazon, Michaels, or Dick Blick.
Sharpie Markers of all sizes
For general sketching, shading, and blocking out the sun, nothing beats a good old Sharpie. They’re easy to find, cheap to buy in bulk, and reliable. They also come in a variety of size. You can make quick work of a page with an extra large, or get down and dirty with an extra fine tip. Buy them most anywhere, but here’s a link to Amazon.
